Opening scene:
- Panning camera is used to follow a trail of blood. This adds suspense as viewers feel as though they are following the blood trail and there will be something unpleasant at the end of it.
- As this is happening, the score being played is dark and unnerving. This again, builds suspense and notifies viewers of the unpleasant thing which awaits.
- The diegetic sound of the wind can also be heard. This sound has strong connotations with fear and danger and could suggest that something bad is about to happen.
- There is then a big long shot of Shirley standing in the middle of the road, suggesting that she is totally distant from the viewers and distant from her former self.
Interrogation scene:
- There is a long, 3 shot of the suspect and the two interrogators sitting inside the glass dome. This is effective as it allows viewers to see all 3 characters within the same shot.
- There are later several close up shots of each character as they speak. This adds intensity to the scene as there is a deep focus on each character's face and therefore viewers can visibly see their anxiety.
Snow scene:
- A deep focus is used on the dad's face as he wakes up. This ensures that viewers can visibly see all of the strain, snow and snots on his face.
- The next cut is an extreme long shot of him standing in a field of snow. For this, high key lighting is used to add an intense uncomfortable brightness to the snow.
