Fortitude - Notes

Opening scene:
  • Panning camera is used to follow a trail of blood. This adds suspense as viewers feel as though they are following the blood trail and there will be something unpleasant at the end of it.
  • As this is happening, the score being played is dark and unnerving. This again, builds suspense and notifies viewers of the unpleasant thing which awaits.
  • The diegetic sound of the wind can also be heard. This sound has strong connotations with fear and danger and could suggest that something bad is about to happen.
  • There is then a big long shot of Shirley standing in the middle of the road, suggesting that she is totally distant from the viewers and distant from her former self.
Interrogation scene:
  • There is a long, 3 shot of the suspect and the two interrogators sitting inside the glass dome. This is effective as it allows viewers to see all 3 characters within the same shot.
  • There are later several close up shots of each character as they speak. This adds intensity to the scene as there is a deep focus on each character's face and therefore viewers can visibly see their anxiety.
Snow scene:
  • A deep focus is used on the dad's face as he wakes up. This ensures that viewers can visibly see all of the strain, snow and snots on his face.
  • The next cut is an extreme long shot of him standing in a field of snow. For this, high key lighting is used to add an intense uncomfortable brightness to the snow.

Breaking Bad - Series 2 Episode 1 Analysis

First Scene:
  • The whole opening sequence of the episode is in low key lighting as it is all shot in the colours black and white. This lighting method has connotations with darkness and therefore implies that dark events are awaiting the viewers.
  • There is a frequent use of close up shots taken of anonymous objects in Walt's garden. This may highlight the importance of these objects as they dominate most of the shot. Deep focoused is also used for all of these items which again perhaps suggests that they are significant to the storyline.
  • There is also the background noise of police cars and ambulences. These sounds have connotations with danger and uneasiness and therefore may foreshadow the events that await.
Seccond Scene:
  • In this scene, one of Tuco's henchmen is forced to hide the body of a fellow henchman underneath a car. As he is placing the corpse underneath the car, a low angle shot is used. This could suggest that the characters have stooped to a very low level.
  • When the henchman is walking away from the dead body, a birds eye shot is used. This places the character directly underneath the camera therefore making them seem very low down, ultimately suggesting that the characters are at a low psychological level.
Third Scene:
  • In this scene Walt and Jesse have an intense stand off with Tuco. The scene begins with a extreme long shot of the three characters and it uses a hand held camera. This creates and unnerving, uneasy atmosphere and makes the viewer feel like they are involved in the scene.
  • Tuco then goes on to throw Jesse on the floor as he is walking away. As he is thrown to the floor, the camera moves in synchronisation with Jesse's face. This allows the viewer to feel the same 'falling' experience that Jesse is feeling.
Fourth Scene:
  • In this scene Skyler, walks through her house to find Walt standing aimlessly in front of the TV. As she walks through the house, a handheld camera is used to follow her, making viewers again feel as though they are involved in the scene.
  • When Walt is seen standing infront of the telly, a big long shot is used which could suggest he is distant from reality.
  • The shot then switches to a close up shot of Walt and deep focous is used on hs face so that viewers can really see his upset, struggling facial expression. This is followed by a very intense 'beeping' sound. This makes viewers feel uneasy and it also suggests that Walt is going through a very tough time.

Youtube Video - Analysis

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2c3ZNQPWxvk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> In this 50 second long scene, the camera spins around so that the viewer can get a perspective of everything that is happening within the scene, for example; at first we see one character being attacked, then the camera turns 360 degrees so we see all of the characters fighting. We also see several different main characters fighting in different parts of the scene, so it is evident to viewers that the battle going on is very intense. Within the scene, there is very little use of lighting therefore the area is made to look very dark, ultimately suggesting that there is a very dark nature behind the battle. The only piece of lighting we see is ambient lighting generated from the flames and torches however these items are associated with destruction which adds to the overall battle miss-en-scene.

Game of Thrones - Scene

  • The ambient lighting created by the candles adds to the mise-en-scene as it is associated with being unnerved and uneasy.
  • Characters are pulling a frightened looking facial expression which may be suggest that they are anticipating something very bad.
  • The photo is a long shot which shows that the characters are far away from the viewers.
  • The photo has also been taken from a slightly high angle showing that the character doesn't have much authority.
